Mind Your Mom!
Just about every May, I sit down to write Homeward Bound; I write about Mom’s Day. And why not… it is a very special day for very special people.
My Mom used to tell me, seemingly repeatedly, to do this and do that, not to do this and not to do that. ALL, I recall, very valuable advice. Looking back on it all these many years later, I can say she was, and still is, a very wise woman.
Time reveals, in fact, just about every caring Mother is a Wise Woman. I can see why we carve out a special day each year to acknowledge Moms. So here is a shout-out to all Mom’s – Happy Mother’s Day!!
My Mother’s Birthday is May 25th which somehow seems to fall on or very close to Mother’s Day each year. So, she gets double the hugs and appropriate accolades every May from my Siblings and me.
Unfortunately, My Mom’s Mom is no longer here. I am sure that makes her very sad this time of year. I am sure some reading this can relate and have similar stories. For ALL those whose Mom is no longer with us, may you remember the best about them. In addition to that, there are also many who never knew their Mom due to unfortunate circumstances. I bet someone played that role in their life and they too deserve a Happy Mother’s Day!
Regardless, we can celebrate this Mother’s Day knowing Moms both here and no longer here are special in more ways than we can count.
Especially the Moms who are sitting right now by their Child’s hospital bed not too far from where I type this…

Who Cares if the Ground Hog got it right, Spring is STILL Coming! I promise.
Spring is Springing! Yay! I just came inside from shooting a video outside and WOW! It’s nice out! Yes, I realize that when you get this and read it that it could be cold and rainy, but those cold days are just about over. Everyone loves Spring, primarily because it means… summer is near!
For many across this great country though, it’s still COLD, grey, and snowy! One thing is for sure, this winter season is coming to an end. It does every year without fail.
Just like the weather seasons come and go, so do the seasons of life. I just turned another year older, my youngest is in college, and my two oldest are off figuring out work and life. Are you with me when I say that these seasons seem to come and go faster and faster as well as the time?
Some of life’s seasons will be HOT and others will be COLD, some high and some low. The lows we want to move by quickly, the highs we want to stay in forever. But it’s the low points, those tough times, that I have learned the most from. All of the experiences through these seasons make me who I am.

What Is the Cheapest Month to Buy a House?
Home prices are usually at their lowest in winter. In fact, according to the 12-month period in the table above, home prices were at their lowest in January 2022—at a median home price of $354,300. So if the best time to buy for you means getting the lowest price, be sure to slip on your warm woolen mittens.
Keep in mind, winter is usually hibernation time for real estate—fewer houses are for sale during the busy holiday season (not to mention some regions have the cold and snow to deal with). In 2021, the number of homes for sale saw its greatest drop from November to December—losing 230,000 homes from the market!
Super low inventory could make it harder to find a home that has all the features you want. But no worries—who really needs a jacuzzi in the master bathroom anyway?
What Month Do Most Houses Go on the Market?
Spring is when most houses go on the market. In 2022, the national number of homes for sale shot up an additional 120,000 from April to May—the fastest rate of growth all year. That number kept growing each month into the summer and reached 1.31 million home listings by July! So, if a jacuzzi and an outdoor firepit are a must for you, spring and summer are the times to shop.
On the downside, spring is also the busiest house-hunting season, so competition and prices will likely be at their highest. This year, home prices shot up $15,600 from February to March and reached their highest point of the year in June at $413,800. But if you can budget for it, it’s often worth shopping when there’s an abundance of homes on the market to choose from.
What time of year is cheapest to <a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/real-estate/how-to-buy-a-house" target="_blank">buy a house</a>? Typically it’s winter because people aren’t usually looking to buy a house once cold weather and the holidays arrive. Less demand for homes will give you some bargaining power.
Is Now a Good Time to Buy a House?
Since most real estate data points and <a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/real-estate/housing-market-forecast" target="_blank">housing market predictions</a> point toward home values continuing to increase over the next few years, it might be better for you to buy now rather than later. But it really depends on your financial situation (more on that later).
The good news is home prices aren’t shooting up as fast as they were in the past few years. And with housing inventory slowly on the rise and higher mortgage rates removing some buying competition, buyers with all their ducks in a row could benefit from buying a house in the current market.

In case you are not sure of the title… it's Labor Day. The Backwards Holiday. Every year when it rolls around, I wonder why it is named Labor Day. Since it’s a Holiday intended to be just that, a Holiday – I would think a better name may be Relax Day or Lazy Day or Off Day or Sleep in Day, maybe even Do-Nothing Day, something other than Labor Day. After all, we know what Labor means. And many will likely be celebrating Labor Day by Laboring.
Labor Day came about because workers felt they were spending too many hours and days on the job.
In the 1830s, manufacturing workers were putting in 70-hour weeks on average. Sixty years later, in 1890, hours of work had dropped, although the average manufacturing worker still toiled in a factory 60 hours a week.
These long working hours caused many union organizers to focus on winning a shorter eight-hour workday. They also focused on getting workers more days off, such as the Labor Day holiday, and reducing the workweek to just six days.
These early organizers clearly won since the most recent data show that the average person working in manufacturing is employed for a bit over 40 hours a week and most people work only five days a week.
Surprisingly, many politicians and business owners were in favor of giving workers more time off. That is because workers who had no free time were not able to spend their wages on traveling, entertainment or dining out.
As the U.S. economy expanded beyond farming and basic manufacturing in the late 1800s and early 1900s, it became important for businesses to find consumers interested in buying the products and services being produced in ever greater amounts. Shortening the work week was one way of turning the working class into the consuming class.

Happy FREEDOM month! As you know July is the month to celebrate FREEDOM.
We assume the rights of freedom and debate its boundaries in politics, yet how often do we take time to reflect on what freedom means to us personally?
Freedom is not a concept carved from stone; it is malleable and personal, always shifting shape depending on where you find yourself standing and the angle of the slanting light.
My personal definition of freedom is the ability to act based on my convictions without external restriction or retribution. It is the ability to represent myself as I see myself to be, not having to hide or disguise who I am in order to pursue happiness, fulfillment, and growth. It is the power of free self-expression. Personal freedom is one of my top three values.
Of course, there are boundaries to freedom. My actions should not hurt others or restrict their personal freedoms, and so this is the dance of conscience. Will what I want conflict with what others want or need? If so, how can I have the personal autonomy I need while respecting the freedom of those around me?
I believe there is always a path for mutual free expression, when we respect one another. Today, as we prepare to celebrate Freedom Month, I offer the following quotes as food for thought and as writing prompts:

Just about every May I sit down to write Homeward Bound; I write about Mom’s Day. And why not… it is a very special day for very special people.
My Mom used to tell me, seemingly repeatedly, to do this and do that, not to do this and not to do that. ALL, I recall, very valuable advice. Looking back on it all these many years later, I can say she was, and still is, a very wise woman.
Time reveals, in fact, just about every caring Mother is a Wise Woman. I can see why we carve out a special day each year to acknowledge Moms. So here is a shout out to all Mom’s – Happy Mother’s Day!!

Just down the street from where I’m typing, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has a full house of kids with many fighting for their lives. And that is no April Fools joking matter. It’s also likely taxes are the furthest thing from the minds of the parents with kids at CHLA.
As you know Children’s Hospital Los Angeles does awesome work in helping kids fight through and survive nasty life-threatening diseases like cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leukemia and others. They also lead the way in early diagnosis of Autism and recovery from spinal cord injuries.
Most don’t know though that Children’s is a non-profit. They depend on sponsorships and donations to provide their world class care and keep costs for the families of these beautiful kids to a minimum.
